Threatening situations
Robberies
Occasionally robberies of cash, stock,
equipment, personal property belonging to clients or staff, or other items occur. In
this instant, stay calm, follow demands, activate alarm system when safe to do so.
Call security or police, protect crime scene and fill in a recollection sheet. Do not try
and be a hero.
To avoid robberies:
- Where possible, keep valuables out of sight.
- Carry small floats of money in till.
- Clear money and bank regularly varying these
times daily.
- If large amounts of money
are involved, employ a security service to collect cash for you.
Undesirable or Suspicious Persons
These people may be clients or people who
have walked in off the street - where the workplace is open to the public. They may
be drunk, on drugs or emotionally disturbed, and display loud abusive, aggressive or
unaccountable behavior.
Managers have the right to request such
people leave the premises and should employ the assistance of security staff or police if
the situation or request is not adhered too.
Staff should always be the "eyes"
of an establishment and report any person they feel is acting suspiciously.
Bomb Threats
These can be received by mail or in person
but are usually made by phone. Always listen to and evaluate the threat carefully and
treat it seriously until proven otherwise.
If made by phone, do not hang up or interrupt
caller. Try to keep the caller talking, extract as much information from them as possible.
Try to attract the attention of another staff member to also listen to the conversation.
Record all information. Key questions to ask are:
- When is the bomb going to explode?
- Where is it?
- What kind is it?
- What does it look like?
- What will cause it to explode?
- What are your motives?
- Who placed the bomb?
- Where are you?
- What is your name?
Immediately notify police and
security with details and stand by for instructions.
