Personal
hygiene, grooming, clothing and footwear
No matter what area you work in, it is important to maintain a high
level of personal and environmental hygiene.
Poor standards can result in an increase in illness and injury in
the workplace - this can effect both workers and clients.
Good hygiene standards involve:
- staff washing hands after smoking, eating, handling garbage,
visiting the toilet, blowing nose, handling animals or handling soiled items;
- staff avoiding unhygienic actions, i.e. sneezing or coughing over
others, or over shared equipment, playing with hair, rubbing nose, picking nails,
scratching skin or sores;
- maintain cleanliness in areas used for consumption, preparation or
storage of food or beverages. i.e. utensils, crockery, table, benches, food storage
areas, refrigerator;
- maintain a vermin free environment through implementing and
maintaining daily cleaning schedules;
- following correct storage and removal procedures for garbage;
- complying with no smoking regulations
- securing long hair and removing jewellery which may be caught in
machines or carry bacteria where food is involved.
- contagious staff not working close to others or with food and
beverages - or with children and other "at risk" client groups.
