Workplace safety


Some common hazards and possible consequences are:

  • Incorrect use of personal protective equipment, i.e. protective gloves, glasses, helmet, boots, overalls - causing possible injury.
  • Jewelry, rings on fingers, earrings, chains or unsecured long hair may get caught in machinery, lost in food and carry bacteria.
  • Loose fitting clothes may become caught in machinery, catch on fire.
  • Short sleeves, shorts worn exposing bare skin to burns, scalds, scratches, contact with irritants.
  • Unguarded machinery or faulty electrical equipment - electric shock, injury, fire.
  • Poorly designed furniture, chairs, workbenches - creating unnatural or awkward posture resulting in back, shoulder, neck strains or injuries.
  • Poor lighting casting shadows on work area, on stairs and walkways, eye strain, falls, cuts and burns.
  • Incorrect storage of chemicals and heavy equipment or items, back strain, poisoning, fumes.
  • Incorrect shelving which does not support goods and buckles under weight or make shift crates or boxes.
  • Obstructions in front of fire escapes, emergency exits or exits or doors blocked by work trolleys, delivery goods, stock.
  • Workers performing tasks that they have not been trained for.
