Workplace Safety

Posture for computer users.

The human spine naturally curves.  sitting in ways that flatten or exaggerate these curves will lead to trouble.

Positioning:

  • Sit up straight, back supported, head up, neck should not be bent.
  • Do not slouch or slump shoulders.  Shoulders should be relaxed and elbows kept close to sides when working.
  • Upper arms and forearms should be at right angles.
  • Knees should be slightly lower than hips.  Feet should be positioned flat on the floor.
  • Do not lean to one side or cross legs for long periods.

Your equipment:

  • Middle of screen should be slightly lower than eyes and about 60 cm away.
  • Keyboard should allow wrists to remain level.  Wrists should not bend up.
  • Mouse should be within easy reach and on same level as keyboard.   Move mouse with entire arm not just the wrist.
  • Seat should fit well or should have adjustable back, seat and arms.
  • Adjust seat to ensure your back is properly supported and feet are flat on the floor.
  • A slope at the front of the seat helps circulation in the legs.

Take a break:

  • Take regular breaks, walk around occasionally.  Take 5-10 minutes away from the computer every hour.
  • Exercise and stretch your back, neck, shoulders, arms, wrists and fingers regularly to avoid injury.
