Introduction
Development of a working model
After some years of working with volunteers at Longbeach
PLACE, it became clear that the development of a sustainable model was
necessary to maintain a more effective volunteer
program.
Although working one-to-one with volunteers has been
successful in the past, a shift to a less labour intensive method using a
team based approach will be trialled and evaluated in 2006.
The model is one that can be used by any community
organisation simply by adapting the templates provided.

Sustainability
This model aims to remain sustainable based on the theory
that people can help themselves by helping others.
Using the principles of Community Development, all team
members are involved in the learning cycle through: planning, doing,
reflecting, improving, learning.
Flexibility is one of the key elements, allowing the
program to be adapted to suit the needs and interests of the group of
individuals participating.
The opportunity to develop leadership skills is brought
about by encouraging team members to share responsibility, rotate tasks and
challenge themselves by taking on different roles.
As the number of individuals in any one team grows, the aim
is for the members within that group to develop the leadership skills
necessary for the formation of the next group or team.
